OUR HISTORY

Stewart's Root Beer first appeared in 1924 when school teacher, Frank Stewart, of Mansfield, Ohio, set out to discover the world's creamiest and best tasting root beer.  He soon opened his first drive-in restaurant to supplement his teacher's income and Frank Stewart's exceptional root beer has now been widely enjoyed for more than 70 years.

Stewart's of Dover opened in 1948.  The original menu consisted of Tasty Franks, Coney Islands, Scramburgers, French Fries and, of course, Stewart's Root Beer.  From its modest beginnings, it has turned into a Morris County landmark and one of the few remaining drive-ins in New Jersey.  It is now serving its fifth generation of customers.  So come, taste the legend!

ROOT BEER

Created in the mid 1800's by Philadelphia pharmacist, Charles Hires, the original root beer was a low alcohol, naturally effervescent beverage made by fermenting a blend of sugar and yeast with various roots, herbs, and barks such as sarsaparilla, sassafras, wild cherry and ginger.  Today's commercial root beer is completely nonalcoholic and generally contains sugar, caramel coloring, and a combination of artificial and natural flavorings with carbonated water for sparkle.  Stewart's Root Beer is also caffeine free.
